If you are going to Brenham for an afternoon of fun and great food — fly your airplane or drive your car to the Southern Flyer Diner.
Located at the Brenham Municipal Airport, the Southern Flyer Diner is a trip back in time to the 50’s, with a jukebox, black and white linoleum tiled floors, and waitresses in poodle skirts and saddle oxfords.
The hubster’s hamburger was thick and he described it as, “very tasty.” Note: I had to get him to stop eating long enough to tell me how he liked the burger.
The Monterrey Chicken is a chicken fried chicken with sautéed onions and fresh bell pepper, topped with melted Monterrey Jack cheese. Served with a fried pickle, and your choice of vegetable and roll. You can also get grilled chicken instead of fried, which is what I did. It was pretty darn good!
Poodle Skirts and Saddle Oxfords
This photo of the girls in front of the Texas Raiders airplane hangs in the lobby of the restaurant. We stopped and chatted with Jack, the owner of the Southern Flyer Diner, who was greeting people as they came in. He told us that when the girls saw the plane, they ran over and posed themselves for a photo. He laughed when he said he could have never gotten them to pose like this. “It would have been like herding cats.”
The gift shop sells poodle skirts and shirts for “Future Poodle Girls.”
The Southern Flyer Diner is busy on weekends, so we sat and watched the planes land and take off while we waited to be seated.
We also walked around and took photos of some of the airplanes.
